1. Check Faults Before You Tune
HP Tuners explicitly recommends checking and resolving diagnostic trouble codes before tuning because mechanical or sensor problems can contaminate the performance data you are trying to interpret.
2. Save The Original Read
Read the current calibration and save an untouched copy before modifying anything. That gives you a known recovery point and a reference for every later revision.
3. Build A Baseline Log
- Use a repeatable road/dyno test and note fuel, weather and starting temperature.
- Confirm throttle reaches the expected value and RPM/speed signals are clean.
- Verify fuel pressure mechanically when the combination warrants it; an ECU cannot report a sensor you do not have.
- Record commanded mixture and a trustworthy measured mixture source when making WOT fueling decisions.
- Flag knock retard, spark, IAT, ECT and transmission behavior in the same time window.
4. Review In This Order

| Spark / knock | Where does KR occur, and does it correlate with heat, load, fuel quality or a repeatable event? |
| Transmission | Did the shift/TCC event distort RPM, load or torque during the same window? |
5. Change One Thing And Re-Test
HP Tuners' getting-started workflow is iterative: edit, save, write, scan the result, then repeat. Changing several unrelated areas at once makes it much harder to know what actually fixed or worsened the behavior.
